On Sunday, May 2th, giant puppets, human-powered floats and thousands of participants will make their way down Bloomington Avenue and into Powderhorn Park for the 30th annual MayDay Parade, Pageant & Festival.
Begun as a small celebration in 1975, In the Heart of the Beast Puppet and Mask Theatre’s MayDay Parade has evolved into one of the most successful community-building efforts in the region. By transforming our building on East Lake Street into a giant artist studio for the month of April, where no reservations or participation fee is required, In the Heart of the Beast has created an accessible and inclusive event that incorporates the talents of people from all strata of society. Each layer of papiér-machê, every coat of paint, and all the simple costumes work together to create a joyful, funky, fun event that is both celebration for our beautiful world and prayer that we will have the wisdom to be good stewards.
This year, as in past years, we ask for your help to produce this one-of-a-kind community celebration. Your gift to MayDay allows us to keep the public workshop sessions free and open to everyone and to help us maintain the non-commercial tone of the day. We earn about one third of the $150,000 that is needed to produce MayDay through vendor fees, ad sales and concessions, one third comes from grants; and, for the final one third, we look to you.
