PUPPET AND MASK CONSTRUCTIONFamily Stories*
Create a new tradition for your family. Take a family story or legend and turn it into a toy theater show that will delight everyone at family gatherings. You will build a small stage and puppets, and explore the ways to bring your unique story to life with sound and movement. All kinds of families welcome!
ARTS AND CRAFTSStar Quilts
Learn some of the history, stories, and meanings behind the star quilts of the Plains Indians. Design and sew your own quilt using fabric from old clothes and discarded fabric scraps. Students must have access to a sewing machine.
Beginning Mosaics: Vase, Mirror, Pot, Bowl*
Make a holiday gift or a work of art for your home! Students will learn the basics of mosaic design and choose a vase, mirror, pot or bowl to create a mosaic using tile, glass, and pottery. All materials provided. VOICE AND PERFORMANCEJuggling*
Gain self-confidence, hand-eye coordination, upper arm strength, rhythm and creative insight by learning to juggle. Participants will learn the basic three-ball pattern as well as variations and new tricks.
Theatre for Shy People
Shy people can perform too. You will be surprised by how freeing it feels to act through puppets and masks. We will create a safe space to overcome performance anxieties, play some theater games and try out different kinds of puppets.

New for Kids!Saturday Puppet-Making WorkshopsIntroducing a new series of “make and take” puppet and craft workshops to complement our very popular Saturday Matinee Puppet Shows for Kids.Nearly every Saturday from October to March, we present a different puppet show by talented local puppeteers. INSTRUCTORSChris GriffithChris has produced, directed, created and performed participatory theater in the Twin Cities for over a decade. He co-founded and served as co-Artistic Director of the highly acclaimed Galumph Interactive Theater. As a clown and juggler Chris has performed for the Minnesota Children’s Museum, the Minnesota Fringe Festival and Edmonton International Street Performer’s Festival. Julie KastigarAnishinabe artist, storyteller/ puppeteer and educator, Julie Kastigar has toured the nation for the past 18 years, both with HOBT and independently. Recent work includes A Company of Angels, La Befana, On the Day You Were Born, Coyote Stories, and Retelling the World. Julie has a BA in Studio Arts and American Indian Studies. She is passionate about work that fosters cultural pride and value. Esther OurayEsther is a puppeteer with a degree in theatre arts and vast training in dance and movement. She has been involved with HOBT for over 25 years in a variety of capacities. In addition, she has worked with Kids Solidarity Theatre, Illusion Theatre, Interact, Epoch Productions, Jewish Community Center of St. Paul, At the Foot of the Mountain Theatre, and Voices of Sepharad. Wendy SmithWendy has been making, teaching and selling mosaics in the Twin Cities for nine years. She has shown her work at the Minneapolis Farmer’s market, Nisswa Majestic Pines Show, Maple Grove Art Show, and Wayzata James J Hill Days. She has taught independently and through Brainerd and Minneapolis community education as well as at HOBT. |
