Classes and Workshops

for Adults, Educators and Youth

In the Heart of the Beast Puppet and Mask Theatre offers a wide range of puppet and mask construction and performance classes for every level of learner – there is something for everyone!
All of our classes are taught by professional puppeteers,many of whom have skills far beyond the world of puppet and mask theatre.
We are proud to present their puppetry magic and other artistic talents, from marionettes and maskmaking to quilting and mosaics. Enjoy!

Please note most classes are for adults; those marked by an asterisk(*) are also open to youth ages 10 and up.

PUPPET AND MASK CONSTRUCTION

Family Stories*

Create a new tradition for your family. Take a family story or legend and turn it into a toy theater show that will delight everyone at family gatherings.

You will build a small stage and puppets, and explore the ways to bring your unique story to life with sound and movement. All kinds of families welcome!

ARTS AND CRAFTS

Star Quilts

Learn some of the history, stories, and meanings behind the star quilts of the Plains Indians. Design and sew your own quilt using fabric from old clothes and discarded fabric scraps. Students must have access to a sewing machine.

  • Three Tuesdays:  November 28 and December 5 and 12 6 – 9 pm $65 (plus $25 materials fee)

Beginning Mosaics:  Vase, Mirror, Pot, Bowl*

Make a holiday gift or a work of art for your home! Students will learn the basics of mosaic design and choose a vase, mirror, pot or bowl to create a mosaic using tile, glass, and pottery. All materials provided.

  • Three Thursdays: November 30,  December 7 and 14 6 – 9 pm $65 (plus a $30 materials fee)

VOICE AND PERFORMANCE

Juggling*

Gain self-confidence, hand-eye coordination, upper arm strength, rhythm and creative insight by learning to juggle. Participants will learn the basic three-ball pattern as well as variations and new tricks.

  • Two Mondays December 4 and 11 6:30 – 8:30 pm $35 (plus a $10 materials fee)

Theatre for Shy People

Shy people can perform too. You will be surprised by how freeing it feels to act through puppets and masks. We will create a safe space to overcome performance anxieties, play some theater games and try out different kinds of puppets.

  • Two Wednesdays, December 6 and 13 6:30 – 8:30 pm $40

You can register by phone, mail, fax, email, or in person. We accept payment by check, cash, credit card, or money order. Full payment of tuition and material fees are required upon registration. Please register early to ensure space is available as class size is limited.

POLICIES

Withdrawals

If you cancel your registration eight days or more in advance of the class, you will receive a full refund minus a non refundable $10 processing charge that is included in the registration fee. If a cancellation occurs within the week prior to the class, you will receive a 50% refund minus the $10 processing charge. No refunds will be issued on or after the start date of the class, unless there is a waiting list and a student to fill your spot.

Cancellations

Each class has a minimum registration and HOBT reserves the right to cancel a class if that minimum is not met. In the event of a cancellation, you will receive a full refund and will not be charged for processing.

Special Needs

If you have any needs that may impact your time with us, please contact us in advance so that we can make the class as accessible and enjoyable as possible.

Location

All camps, classes and workshops will be held at HOBT’s new Studio on the 3rd Floor of Plaza Verde, 1516 East Lake Street, Mpls 55407. Plaza Verde is the green building next to HOBT’s Avalon Theatre. Free parking is available in the Plaza Verde lot behind the theatre (enter on 15th Ave).
